The main problem in rural Vietnam is that there is virtually no work. Most grow rice. However, there are only a few periods of the year in which harvesting can take place, so people are looking for an extra income and have hardly any choice.

Some go to work in a factory nearby to peel shrimp. Others have their own business, usually at home, sometimes elsewhere, for example at a market. Almost always on a small scale: only the owner and sometimes a single helper. Some work on the land or do some more specific work. It is often easier to combine various activities in this way. The disadvantage is that earn virtually nothing.

For my hobby as a photographer, I visited small businesses in the countryside and asked if I could portray their daily activities. Many owners reacted enthusiastically and gladly shared their story, which resulted in an e-book “Small businesses in Vietnam – A view from within.

The book

This book gives a good impression of life and especially working here in the Vietnamese countryside. In particular:

physically hard work
the very long days that some make
the often meager earnings
amount of work that children must perform in addition to their normal school activities.

For this e-book, made in-house, all chapters have been carefully checked, also by others. Where necessary, texts have been adjusted and / or replacement photos have been made and new photos have been added. In addition, a lot of care has been given to the layout.

I wonder how much time you have spent for this writing, and also for taking pictures, it's must be a lot of time!!! I don't understand Dutch but I can understand all Vietnamese words in your photos 😉 so I can guess. I appreciate your photos presentation. Many many beautiful pictures! Authentic pictures that a simple tourist (even me if a day I return to visit Vietnam) cannot reach. We can hardly find these photos in another book. They talk by themselves about life of different small companies in Vietnam! You have absolutely succeeded your project!!!

Toen ik de laatst op bezoek was bij mijn vrienden Fred en Minh in Vietnam en een fietstochtje maakte in de omgeving, viel mij op dat her en der langs wegen en paden allerlei spul lag wat op het eerste gezicht afval leek. Ook zag ik in het vochtige land vele eenden en kippen ogenschijnlijk vrij rondlopen en vroeg mij af wat het doel hiervan was.

Maar na het lezen van het boek over Kleine Bedrijven in Vietnam heb ik een andere blik hierover gekregen. Een voorbeeld: Schillen en restmateriaal van kokosnoten die zo niets ter zake doende langs de weg leken te liggen, blijken voor velerlei producten te worden gebruikt. Niet alleen het eetbare deel en het vocht en vruchtvlees, maar ook de schillen en vezels levert weer het basismateriaal op voor (nieuwe) producten. Dit is maar een klein voorbeeld van de inventiviteit waarmee de Vietnamees van niets lijkend, veel meer weet te maken en zo z'n inkomsten vergroot.

Het boek, wat ik voor het gemak nu maar KBinVN noem, legt tot in detail uit wat er op allerlei gebied zoal wordt gedaan. Om tot een betere en slimmere verwerking van deze producten te komen, ontwerpen sommige boerenondernemers zelfs hun eigen machines om tot een snellere en handiger verwerking van hun producten te komen om het zo verder als eind- of bijproduct te kunnen aanbieden aan een volgende verwerker. Het boek KBinVN beperkt zich niet alleen tot eet of drinkbare producten maar ook op het gebied van materiaal zoals betonverwerking, meubelen, motortechniek en kleine shops voor fotografie en kapsalons.

Maar er zijn ook andersoortige werkzaamheden te zien op het gebied van: koken, eenden en kippen houden, viskwekerijen en verwerking tot voedsel en afgeleide producten. Ook op het gebied van bouwmaterialen zoals steenfabrieken, houtzagerijen en verzameling van karton en blikjes voor o.a. hergebruik.

En dit is maar een kleine indruk die ik naar aanleiding van het boek Kleine Bedrijven in Vietnam heb gekregen. Ik beveel de lezer dan ook aan om dit boek te bestellen. Het is reuze interessant en met veel aandacht voor detail geschreven. Het geeft een goede inkijk in het productieve en inventieve leven van de Vietnamezen die in de kleine bedrijven werkzaam zijn.

For this e-book I am asking a modest amount . Until I left Vietnam the proceeds from this e-book went to the following goals:

Photo albums for the owners

The owners of the small companies who have worked on the e-book have received the photos from me as they appear in the book. I wanted to surprise these people with some extra photos of their own company.

Library for children from the area

Minh tought English to children from the area on weekends. She did this as a volunteer. She had set up a small library for her students and possibly other children from the neighborhood. Thanks in part to donations from a few girlfriends, it consisted of around 300 books and was a great success.

Study books for students

Sometimes Minh bought other study books for her students. They, for example, used the new English textbooks before they were used in school.
